Required Software License:
It is required to have a license to use the software MyMathLab in this
class and students have two choices.
The first
choice is to purchase the textbook packaged with MyMathLab from
the bookstore or some other source. The
second choice is to purchase the license alone either from
the bookstore or online at coursecompass.com. The license gives you access
to the textbook online. This is a
more economical choice, but you will need access to the

COURSE
DESCRIPTION:
This course is designed for prospective elementary and middle school
teachers. Emphasis is placed on the
mathematical knowledge needed for teaching in grades as high as eighth.
We will focus on conceptual understanding of the topics including WHY
things work and why other things do not work.
The depth of your basic skills in math will be increased during this
course as you participate in solving problems and performing operations in a
number of different ways. There will
also be a pedagogical focus including using a variety of teaching and learning
styles through out the course including manipulatives, investigations, written
projects, discussion questions, small group activities, and appropriate use of
technology. In addition, I hope that
you will leave the class excited about teaching math to others.
OVER
HOMEWORK:
Homework will be done in two main ways:
1) The mechanics will be done online using MyMathLab. Due dates are
listed for you when you go on line to do the assignments.
Feel free to consult a fellow classmate, a tutor, your instructor, or
anyone else for assistance on the homework. In addition, the computer will give
you help with any problem, show you an example of a similar problem, and in some
cases show you a video of someone teaching how to do that type of problem.
You can work on homework after the due date but there can be penalties if
you are chronically late.
2) Problems involving deeper thinking will be done in small groups
meeting primarily during class times so
consistent attendance is important.
The small groups will change from time to time so you will have the
opportunity to work with a variety of people and to experience a wide variety of
abilities and learning styles. QUIZZES: Quizzes covering the mechanics of the concepts will be taken online in MyMathLab. Before you take the quiz, make sure that you have done the homework for the sections covered in the quiz, read the appropriate sections in the textbook, looked at the video(s), and received assistance from either the computer, a tutor, or your instructor on any difficult topics. If you do not take a quiz on time, a zero will be recorded for that grade.
Make-up Policy:
For Exams and the Final,
make-up is possible if the instructor is
contacted in advance and the absence is excused; there is a
10% penalty for each day you are late if the absence is not excused.
You have a full week to do your quizzes, do not procrastinate; there is
no make-up for quizzes.
Group homework will not be
accepted late but one assignment will be dropped at the end of the quarter.
TUTORING:
Tutoring is available in the Math Success Center (MSC) in Room 201.
The lab is open M – Th 9 – 6, Fri 10 – 2, Sat 11 – 1.
There are also computers here for you to use when you do your work in
MyMathLab if you do not have your own computer.
