INTERMEDIATE ALGEBRA

MATH 154, 4 units

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This course is a continuation of Math 152B and covers algebraic tools

commonly used in business, science and math. Students will learn to solve

applications with quadratic equations and systems of quadratic equations.

Students will be introduced to the definition of a function and its inverse,

exponential and logarithmic functions, sequences and series and conic

sections.

by Hirsch and Goodman

RECOMMENDED COURSE PREREQUISITES:

C or better in Math 152B within the last two years.

STUDENT OUTCOMES/OBJECTIVES:

1. Demonstrate a reduction of their fear of mathematics.

2. Exhibit an introductory proficiency in several branches of Mathematics.

3. Manifest their understanding of the application of Mathematics in the

real world.

4. Engage in logical and critical thinking.

5. Show proficiency in reading technical information.

6. Demonstrate the solution to problems by translating written language into

mathematical statements, interpreting information, sketching relevant

diagrams, analyzing given information, formulating appropriate math

statements and checking and verifying results.

REGISTRATION:

1. You must register for this class at the Office of Admissions and

Records.

2. The last day to drop the class with no record is Friday, January 29

3. The last day to drop the class for a "W" grade is Friday, March 5

4. After March 5, if you are enrolled, you will receive one of the following

grades: A B C D F or I (Incomplete is only allowed in special cases).

GRADES:

Grades will be based upon total points accumulated throughout the

quarter. There will be two midterm exams, a comprehensive final exam, four

quizzes, and 10 weekly homework assignments due each Tuesday. The following

point totals will be used:

Two midterm exams @ 50 points each: 100

Four quizzes @ 25 points each: 100

Ten homework assignments @ 10 points each: 100

Final exam @ 100 points: 100

TOTAL POINTS AVAILABLE 400

Grading Scale, calculated as a percentage of total points:

90% - 100% A

80% - 89.9% B

70% - 79.9% C

60% - 69.9% D

59.9% and below F

At any time during the quarter, you may find out your standing in the class

by the following:

(1) Total the points you have earned, divided by the total points

available to date, and compare the results to the percentages

noted above. OR

(2) Ask me and I will gladly provide you with an answer.

IMPORTANT CLASSROOM POLICIES:

Make-up work:

Make-ups on exams and quizzes must have been approved prior to the

absence, otherwise no make-ups will be given and you will receive a

zero.

Attendance:

Attendance is required in class. Absences in excess of 10% of class

meetings (more than two) may result in being dropped from the class.

HOW TO SUCCEED IN A MATH CLASS:

1) Come to every class meeting.

2) Arrive early, get yourself settled and be ready when class starts.

3) Read each section before it is discussed in class. Ask questions.

4) Do all the homework and turn it in on time for full credit.

5) Do some math homework every day.

6) Start preparing for tests at least a week in advance.

7) Do some review every time that you study math.

8) Individual tutoring is available in the Tutoring Lab (Room E103).

I will provide individual help when asked.

9) It is important that students identified as learning disabled come speak

to me individually about their special needs.
