check it. Tutoring: Free tutoring is available at the Gateway Math Center at LTCC. I will be working as a tutor on Sat and Sun; I’ll let you know what the hours are. Course Description: The purpose of this course is to teach students the skills in basic arithmetic and to enable them to apply these skills in the manipulation and application of basic arithmetic problems. Each class is a six-week course covering: Math 191S Whole Numbers (Chapter 1) Fractions (Chapter 2) Introduction to Decimals (Part of Chapter 3)
Math 191T Decimals (Remaining part of Chapter 3) Percent & Proportion (Chapter 5) Converting Units of Measure (Section 6.4) Square Root (Section 7.5) Signed Numbers (Section 9.1 – 9.4) Introduction to Algebra (Sections 10.1 – 10.5) Grading: The grades break down as follows. 20% Quizzes 20% Homework 60% Final Once the final grade is determined 100%-90% A 89%- 80% B 79%-70% C 60%-69% D 0%-59% F Homework: Do Every Other Odd problem. That is problems 1,5,9,13,17,21,25,29,....... Every odd problem has an answer in the back of the book. I expect you to check your work as you go along, and to come to class with questions about the homework. Calculators will not be allowed on quizzes and tests, but I recommend that you get one and use it to check your homework. Cheating is against the rules. Please don’t cheat. The purpose of this class is to prepare you for other classes; cheating will only hurt you in the next course. In this class, it is your responsibility to drop the class in order to avoid an unwanted grade. For Math 191S-2, Friday, April 18, 2003 is the last day to drop with no record. Friday, May 2, 2003 is the last day to withdraw with a “W” grade.
For Math 191T-2, Friday, May 30, 2003 is the last day to drop with no record. Friday, June 13, 2003 is the last day to withdraw with a “W” grade. How to succeed in a Math class: 1. Come to every class meeting. 2. Arrive early, get yourself settled and be ready when class starts. Sit where you won’t be distracted and take notes. 3. Read each section before it is discussed in class. 4. Do all the homework 5. Do some math every day. 6. Start preparing for exams at least one week in advance. 7. Ask questions, especially if you don’t understand a concept. 8. Take advantage of tutors and office hours. 9. Study in groups and do your homework with a classmate.
