Required Text:  Basic College Mathematics by Tobey & Slater, Fourth Edition.

Course Description:  The purpose of this course is to teach students the skills in basic arithmetic and to enable them to apply these skills in the manipulation and application of basic arithmetic problems. This is a six-week course covering:

Decimals (Chapter 3)

Percent & Proportion (Chapter 5)

Converting Units of Measure (Section 6.4)

Square Root (Section 7.5)

Signed Numbers (Sections 9.1 – 9.4)

Introduction to Algebra (Sections 10.1 – 10.5)

Students with disabilities must identify themselves to me within the first two weeks of class.

Accommodations for Students with Disabilities: Students requiring accommodations for a certain disability that may affect class performance are requested to schedule with a staff member at the DRC to discuss this during the first week of the quarter so that appropriate arrangements can be made.

* Course materials available in alternate format.

In this class, it is your responsibility to drop the class in order to avoid an unwanted grade.

You must go to Admissions & Records.  For Math 191T-2,

Friday, May 30, 2003 is the last day to drop with no record.

Friday, June 13, 2003 is the last day to withdraw with a “W” grade.

How to succeed in a Math class:

1.  Come to every class meeting.

2.  Arrive early, get yourself settled and be ready when class starts.  Sit where you won’t be                    distracted and take notes.

3.  Read each section before it is discussed in class.

4.  Do all the homework

5.  Do some math every day.

6.  Start preparing for exams at least one week in advance.

7.  Ask questions, especially if you don’t understand a concept.

8.  Take advantage of tutors and office hours.

9.      Study in groups and do your homework with a classmate.

The Gateway Math Center has free tutoring for all registered students.  Please Log In and Out so that the facility gets the funds it needs.

Method of Evaluation:

Homework must be completed and turned in at the beginning of class on the day it is due.  Please be neat, write the problem out and show your work for each homework problem.  Each section that is incomplete receives partial credit.  Homework that is turned in late within one week of the due date will receive half credit.  Homework over one week late receives no credit.   Homework counts for 10% of the class grade.

2 Quizzes are given for each course.  Quizzes are given at the end of class after the lecture.  Each quiz counts for 20% of the class grade for the course.  All students are to take the quiz on the same day.  If you miss a quiz, there is a penalty of one letter grade.  No quiz can be made up after 3 days.

Exams are given at the end of each course.  All students must take the exam by the last day of class.  If a student does not receive a passing grade in a course, that student will not be allowed to continue on to the next course.  The exam counts for 50% of the class grade for that course.

Each course receives a separate grade.  Grades are based on the following scale.

                        A                                 90% - 100%

                        B                                 80% - 89%

                                                        70% - 79%

                        D                                 60% - 69%

Homework problems that say Odd, means do all the Odd problems.

EOO means do Every Other Odd problem.
