Required Text:  Basic College Mathematics by Tobey & Slater, Fourth Edition.

Course Description:  The purpose of this course is to teach students the skills in basic arithmetic and to enable them to apply these skills in the manipulation and application of basic arithmetic problems.  This is a modular course covering the first three modules of the Math 181 A-E sequence.  Each module is one unit and covers a different topic:

Module 181 A                                    Whole Numbers (Chapters 1 & Section 7.5)

Module 181 B                                                Fractions (Chapter 2)

Module 181 C                                    Decimals (Chapter 3)

This class is a positive attendance class.  I will take attendance every day.

Students with disabilities must identify themselves to me within the first two weeks of class.

Accommodations for Students with Disabilities: Students requiring accommodations for a certain disability that may affect class performance are requested to schedule with a staff member at the DRC to discuss this during the first week of the quarter so that appropriate arrangements can be made.

* Course materials available in alternate format.

How to succeed in a Math class:

1.  Come to every class meeting.

2.  Arrive early, get yourself settled and be ready when class starts.  Sit where you won’t be                  distracted and take notes.

3.  Read each section before it is discussed in class.

4.  Do all the homework

5.  Do some math every day.

6.  Start preparing for exams at least one week in advance.

7.  Ask questions, especially if you don’t understand a concept.

8.  Take advantage of tutors and office hours.

9.      Study in groups and do your homework with a classmate.

The Gateway Math Center has free tutoring for all registered students.  Please Log In and Out so that the facility gets the funds it needs.

Calculators are not allowed for this class.

Method of Evaluation:

Homework must be completed and turned in by four o’clock on the day it is due.

If a homework section is incomplete, 10% will be deducted from the grade at the end of the class for each section that is not complete.  That means that if three sections are not complete, then 30% will be deducted from the grade for the module.

Exams are given at the end of each module and quizzes are given at the half way point of each module.  If a student does not receive a passing grade in a module, that student will not be allowed to continue on to the next module.  The quiz counts for 30% of the grade for the module and the exam counts for 70% of the grade for that module.

Each Module receives a separate grade.  Grades are based on the following scale.

                        A                                 90% - 100%

                        B                                 80% - 89%

                                                        70% - 79%

                        D                                 60% - 69%
