Required Textbook:  College Algebra and Trigonometry with Graphing Technology, by

David E. Stevens.

Recommended Textbook:  Student Manual for College Algebra and Trigonometry with Graphing Technology, by David E. Stevens.

Course Description:  This course explores in depth exponential and logarithmic functions, conic sections including circles, parabolas, ellipses and hyperbolas.  We will study linear systems, matrices, sequences and series and mathematical induction.  Special emphasis will be placed on application problems and the use of graphing calculators.

Prerequisite:  A grade "C" or better in Math 103-A, or a satisfactory completion of the Math assessment process.

In this class, it is your responsibility to drop the class in order to avoid an unwanted grade.

You must go to Admissions and Records.

April 26, 2002 is the last day to drop with no record.

May 31, 2002 is the last day to withdraw with a “W” grade.

Students with disabilities must identify themselves to me within the first two weeks of class.

Accommodations for Students with Disabilities: Students requiring accommodations for a certain disability that may affect class performance are requested to schedule with a staff member at the DRC to discuss this during the first week of the quarter so that appropriate arrangements can be made.

* Course materials available in alternate format.

Grading:  Your class letter grade will be based on the percentage of total points:

A:  90% and above,      B: 80-89%,     C: 70-79%,        D: 60-69%, F: 59% and under.

                        Homework:                                          165 points

                                    (Practice Problems: 75 points)

                                    (Even Problems:  90 points)

                        3 Quizzes (25 pts each):                          75 points

                        Exam 1:                                                120 points

                        Exam 2:                                                120 points

                        Exam 3:                                                120 points

                        Final Exam:                                           150 points

                        Total:                                                    750 points

Homework:  I have given practice problems for each section.  These exercises are for you to improve your understanding of the material and to prepare you for quizzes and exams.  Do these problems after each of their lectures.  They are to be turned in on the day of the Exam covering those sections.  The first Exam group is worth 25 points, the second Exam group is worth 25 points, the third exam group is worth 20 points and the final Exam group is worth 5 points.  The Even numbered problems are due on Wednesdays.   If you will be absent on that day, either turn in the homework assignment early or have someone turn in the homework assignment for you. These problems are considered late if it is not turned in at this time. Homework that is turned in late, but turned in by the next class meeting receives half credit.  Homework turned in after this receives no credit. The Practice Problems and the Even-numbered problems and their due dates are on the last pages of the syllabus.

Quizzes:  There are no make-up quizzes.  I give 4 quizzes but only 3 are counted so your lowest quiz score is dropped.

Exams:  You must notify me before an exam if you will miss the exam (541-4660 EXT 368).  Exams must be made up within 3 school days after the scheduled date, with a penalty of 10%, (except with a written doctor’s excuse.)  You may take an exam up to 3 school days before the scheduled date without penalty.  Arrangements must be made with me in advance.  If you have turned in every homework assignment with no more than 2 late, you may drop one midterm score.
