REQUIRED TEXT: Geometry, by Harold Jakobs, 2nd edition.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This is a formal course in Geometry covering the basics of lines, planes, angles, triangles and congruence, the Pythagorean Theorem, similarity, and special right triangles. The methods of deductive reasoning will be studied in depth. A portion of this class will be taught in the computer lab.

PREREQUISITE: C or better in Mat152A and Mat152B, or satisfactory score on assessment test. Mat152B may be taken concurrently.

GRADING POLICY:

Exam 1 (Chapters 1 and 2) 100 points

Exam 2 (Chapters 3 and 4) 100 points

Exam 3 (Lessons 5.1, 5.2, Chs.6 and 9) 100 points

Homework 90 points

Lab 75 points

Quizzes 80 points

Final (cumulative) 150 points

Total= 695points

Your letter grade will be based on your percentage of the total points. The total points possible is 600 points.

A 90-100%

B 80-89%

C 70-79%

D 60-69%

F less than 60%

MAKE-UP POLICY: There is no make-ups for quizzes however one quiz score will be dropped, taking the best 4 out of 5 quizzes. Make-up for Exams and the Final will be assessed a 10% penalty (except with written medical excuse). Students must contact the instructor in advance of the examination in order to arrange a make-up. If there is anyone in this class who has need for test-taking or note-taking accommodation, please feel free to come and discuss this with me.

LAB: Computer lab activities will be a component of this class. We will meet in Computer Lab D123 on Thursdays from 6:00-6:50PM, beginning the first week of class. Lab work will be completed and handed in within one week (two class periods) of the assigned lab.

HOMEWORK: Homework will be handed in each class period it is due. Homework assigned is due the next class period. For example, homework assigned on Tuesday is due Thursday and homework assigned Thursday is due the following Tuesday. No late homework will be accepted, no exceptions.

OFFICE HOURS: One-half hour before class on Tuesdays at the high school, and after class as needed, or by appointment.

TUTORING: Free tutoring is available in the Learning Assistance Lab, B107. Schedules for tutoring will be handed out when made available to me.

REGISTRATION:

1. You must register for this class at the Office of Admissions and Records.

2. The last day to drop the class with no record is Friday, Oct. 16, 1998.

3. The last day to drop the class for a "W" grade is Friday, Nov. 20, 1998.

4. After Nov. 20, 1998, if you are enrolled, you will receive one of the following grades: A, B, C, D, F, or I (Incomplete, to be negotiated with the instructor). In this class, it is YOUR responsibility to drop the class in order to avoid a grade!
