Fall Quarter, 1998

Instructor Audrey Morrow

COURSE SYLLABUS

September 21: Intro to Math 152 B. Cover Section 3.3 and begin Section 3.4, various factoring techniques, factoring trinomials.

September 23: Finish Section 3.4 and start Section 3.5, building additional factoring skills.

September 28: Finish Section 3.5 and Section 4.1. This concludes the sections on factoring, and begins a study of rational expressions.

September 30: Cover Section 4.2 and begin 4.3, sums and differences of rational expressions, how to simplify effectively and so on.

October 5: Complete Section 4.3, and cover 4.4. Mixed operations and complex fractions (rational expressions that contain more than one fraction bar).

October 7: Cover Section 4.5, rational equations and inequalities.

October 12: Cover Section 4.6 and review factoring and rational expressions. Begin 4.7, word problems involving the material just covered.

October 14: Consider this a tentative exam date for Midterm 1. The first midterm will cover Sections 3.3, 3.4, 3.5, and Sections 4.1-4.6.

October 19: Finish Section 4.7 and begin 5.5, word problems involving rational expressions, and solving linear systems in two variables.

October 21: Cover Section 10.5 and Section 2.5, Systems of linear inequalities and absolute value equations and inequalities. (These two topics really do work nicely together and are not reliant on previous pages of the text.)

October 26: Cover Section 6.4, Rational exponents.

October 28: Cover Section 7.1, Radicals and rational exponents. Review previous material on linear systems and inequalities, and absolute value equations and inequalities.

November 2: Cover 7.2 and 7.3, Simplifying radical expressions and combining radicals. (The addition and subtraction of radical expressions.)

November 4: Cover 7.4, Multiplying and dividing with radical expressions. Begin 7.5, Radical equations.

November 9: Midterm #2 covering Sections 4.7, 5.5, 10.5, 2.5, 6.4 and 7.1 -7.3. Again, consider this a tentative midterm date:.

November 11: Finish 7.5 and cover 7.6, The complex numbers.

November 16: Review previous material, and begin Section 8.1, solving second-degree equations using the factoring and square-root methods.

November 18: Finish Section 8.1, begin 8.2 Completing the square.

November 23: Finish Section 8.2 and begin 8.3, the Quadratic Formula.

November 25: Finish Section 8.3 and review previous material.

November 30: Cover 11.5, Direct and inverse variation.

December 2: Cumulative review of the course material. Bring questions to class!

December 7: Cumulative final exam, 6pm-8pm.
