Solution to Problem 1

We use the formula:

n=p(1-p)(z/E)^2

We have

p = 0.12

E = 0.03

c = 0.95

zc = 1.96

Putting these together gives

n=0.12*0.88*(1.96/0.03)^2 = 450.75

We always round up to determine the sample size needed.  We can conclude that 451 college students need to be surveyed.
