Members Present:  Kurt Green, Jon Kingsbury, Larry Green, Steve Fernald, Beachy Orr, Rosie Hackett

Items discussed:

1)      Approval of minutes from April 3 meeting: Approved by consensus

2)  Start evaluation process of new courses submitted:

The committee reviewed the original ten courses that were submitted for SLOs and MASLOs which resulted in nine being moved forward and one being returned to the initiator.  There were 16 additions that resulted in all being moved forward. 

3)  Evaluation of resubmitted courses:

There were three resubmitted courses that resulted in all being moved forward.

4)  Mike Spina – SLOs/MASLOs:

Mike addressed the committee regarding his course outlines, defending the way his SLOs and MASLOs were originally written, prior to the committee’s initial review. The committee expressed concern that the courses contain lecture hours (3 per course) and yet the SLOs do not reflect those lecture hours.  Rosie questioned the fact that the SLOs, as currently written, do not address several of the ‘Topics and Subtopics’ listed.  The committee asked that his outcomes be more than just ‘outcomes’ and that he address the learning component of the outcomes.  Larry raised the questions of ‘What is the learning outcome?’ ‘What is the Web Site measuring?’   Steve addressed the issue that the 'outcomes' were really 'course objectives'.  Kurt provided Mike with a handout that explains the differences.  Beachy expressed concern that there should be more than two SLOs as these are four-unit courses.  The committee’s suggestion was to elaborate more on the SLOs and to separate the MASLOs from the SLOs.  Mike told the committee that he will work on separating the SLOs into more detailed outcomes and submit them again for review.    

5)  Other items:

Kurt presented a draft of the ‘2006 – 2007 Institutional Annual Report of Student Learning Outcomes’ for the committee to review.  Kurt will be presenting this to Lori Gaskin.
